Description

The Sealed Bridge of Duchesnay — North Bay

Type: Investigation / Diplomacy / Restoration
Difficulty: Hard
Duration: One Week
Location: Duchesnay Falls, North Bay

Story Context

Duchesnay Falls is one of North Bay’s sacred crossings — a place where water, stone, forest, and human footsteps have intertwined for generations. The bridge at the crest of the falls long served as a passageway, linking both sides of the trail network and allowing travelers to experience the full circuit of the land.

Now, the crossing is sealed: a metal gate stands where openness once flowed. Some believe it was closed for safety after storm damage. Others say it was a decision from Parks or the University. Some think it was meant to be temporary — but was simply never revisited. Few seem to know for certain.

The Council calls upon the Hero to uncover the truth and determine what must be done — diplomatically, practically, or administratively — to restore access or at least illuminate the path forward. This is a quest of real investigation. The Hero acts as an emissary between the land, the people, and the institutions that care for it.

Objectives

Step 1: Approach the Sealed Bridge

Travel to Duchesnay Falls and stand before the closed gate. Observe:

  • The physical condition of the bridge and surrounding area
  • Any signs of damage, erosion, or visible risk
  • Notices, locks, or markings on or near the gate
  • How long the closure appears to have been in place
  • Whether it feels temporary or long-term

Treat this as the first clue in an unfolding investigation.

Step 2: Gather Local Voices

Speak with people who frequent or know the area, such as:

  • Regular walkers or hikers
  • Nipissing University students or staff
  • Local trail users
  • Nearby residents
  • Anyone who remembers the bridge before it closed

Ask questions like:

  • “Do you know why the bridge is closed?”
  • “Do you know who is responsible for it?”
  • “Has anyone tried to have it reopened?”
  • “Was any explanation ever given?”

You are collecting perspectives, not final conclusions — building the shape of the story.

Step 3: Identify the Responsible Authority

Determine which organization controls the bridge and its status. Possible authorities include:

  • North Bay Parks or Recreation Department
  • North Bay Public Works or Community Services
  • Local conservation or trail authorities
  • Nipissing University facilities or groundskeeping

Confirm responsibility by checking:

  • Official websites
  • Posted notices at the site
  • Emails, phone calls, or in-person inquiries

This step is complete when you know who made or maintains the decision to keep the bridge sealed and why.

Step 4: Discover the Path to Reopening

Once you understand why the bridge is closed, determine what would be required for it to reopen. Possibilities might include:

  • A safety inspection or structural repair
  • Administrative or liability approval
  • Environmental or conservation considerations
  • A maintenance request or work order
  • Community interest, petition, or organized feedback
  • Budget, planning, or seasonal timing factors

Identify the clearest, most grounded path toward restoration. This is not about forcing change, but about illuminating the correct path for action through the proper channels.

Step 5: Speak for the Bridge

Compile your findings into a clear report or reflection, including:

  • Who is responsible for the bridge and its closure
  • Why it is currently sealed
  • Whether reopening is possible at this time
  • The steps that would be required to change its status
  • Which departments, offices, or individuals would need to be contacted
  • Any suggested next actions for you, the community, or future Heroes who may wish to continue this work

Your words become a map for understanding and potential restoration.
