Description
Collect 3 Different Tree Seeds
Tagline: Gather tomorrow’s forests in the palm of your hand.
📜 Quest Summary
Trees are living timekeepers. By collecting their seeds, you join a lineage of caretakers who plant gifts they may never sit beneath. This quest invites you to meet three different tree species where you live, learn their names, and gather their seeds with respect.
Choose local, non-invasive species. Collect only what is abundant and already released or ready to fall — never damage a tree to obtain seeds. If you are unsure about identification, compare leaf/needle shape, bark, cone/nut/pod form, and use a local guide or app for verification.
When complete, label and photograph your seeds, then email your notes to quests@RLLARP.ca with the subject line “Collect 3 Different Tree Seeds.”
🧭 Suggested Steps
- Pick a local park, riverside, or neighborhood with diverse trees. Bring small paper envelopes or coin bags, a pen, and your phone/camera.
- Identify three different tree species (e.g., maple, pine/spruce, oak, birch, cedar, chestnut, linden). Confirm using leaves/needles, bark, and seed form.
- Collect a modest amount of seeds/cones/nuts from the ground or naturally releasing parts. Do not strip branches.
- Label each envelope with species/common name, location (park/city), and date.
- At home, dry seeds gently on paper for 24–48 hours away from direct sun; then store in labeled envelopes or a small jar.
- Optional: research simple germination/stratification steps for one species and try sprouting it for a future planting quest.
🎯 Completion Markers
- Three different tree species positively identified.
- Seeds properly collected and labeled (species/common name, location, date).
- A clear photo of all three labeled samples together.
- An email to quests@RLLARP.ca titled “Collect 3 Different Tree Seeds,” including the photo and a short note on where/how you found them.
🌱 Identification Tips
- Maple: paired “helicopter” samaras.
- Oak: acorns with caps.
- Pine/Spruce: woody cones; needles in bundles (pine) or single (spruce).
- Birch: tiny winged seeds from catkins; peeling bark.
- Linden/Basswood: small round nutlets on a papery bract “wing.”
⚠️ Safety & Respect
- Use public spaces or get permission on private land. Follow park rules and respect habitat.
- Avoid rare/protected species and invasive species. Collect modestly; leave plenty for wildlife.
- Wash hands after handling plant material; be cautious if you have nut/seed allergies.
✨ Purpose
To deepen relationship with local ecology, practice respectful gathering, and seed future abundance. Small acts today become forests tomorrow.
