Description

Make a Bee House

Tagline: Build a home for the keepers of bloom.

Type: Environmental / Crafting / Service / Educational Difficulty: Moderate Duration: 1–3 Days (plus ongoing care) Location: Home, garden, balcony, or community space

📜 Story Context

The hum of bees is the sound of life itself. Every blossom they visit carries the memory of another—stitching together meadows, gardens, and forests into one living tapestry. Without them, the world grows quiet, and color begins to fade.

In the age of concrete and noise, bees struggle to find the wild spaces they once knew. Yet still, they work tirelessly—messengers of sunlight, pollinating nearly one-third of the food humankind depends upon. They are tiny keepers of balance, unseen yet essential.

The Council of Bloom and Balance calls upon you to honor this ancient alliance between human and bee. Your task is simple yet sacred: to craft a small sanctuary—a bee house—where solitary bees can find shelter and safety. These gentle beings do not make honey, yet their service sustains the sweetness of the world.

To build such a refuge is to participate in the ongoing creation of life. Each hole you drill, each reed you cut, becomes a promise to the Earth: that harmony will be rebuilt, one small home at a time.

🧭 Objectives

  1. Learn the Way of the Builders: Research how to make a bee house suitable for solitary bees such as mason or leafcutter bees. These quiet workers do not live in hives or produce honey, yet their efforts sustain countless plants.
  2. Gather Materials: Collect natural, untreated wood, hollow reeds, or bamboo. Avoid chemicals or paint that could harm the bees.
  3. Build the Sanctuary: Create your bee house with care. Ensure it stays dry and sheltered, facing east or southeast to catch the morning sun.
  4. Place It with Intention: Mount or rest your bee house near flowers, gardens, or trees where bees can easily find food. Offer a thought of gratitude for the lives it will support.
  5. Watch and Record: Visit occasionally to see if it’s being used. Observe quietly—note the patterns, the visitors, the return of gentle buzzing.

🎯 Completion

When your bee house is complete and placed, share your work by sending:
  • A brief description or photo of your creation.
  • Where you placed it and why.
  • What the process taught you about care and coexistence.
Email your reflection or photo to quests@RLLARP.ca with the subject line “Make a Bee House.”

🌟 Bonus Objectives (no additional XP)

  • Plant pollinator-friendly flowers nearby.
  • Build a second bee house for a friend or local garden.
  • Research which bee species are native to your region and note their visits over time.

✨ Purpose

To build not only a home, but a bridge—between humans and the small beings who sustain all life. Each bee house is a promise of protection and a celebration of balance restored. When you create space for them, the realm blooms with gratitude.
