Description
Quest: Riverside Cleanup
Type: Environmental / Service / Physical / Magical
Difficulty: Challenging
Duration: 1–2 Days
Location: Along a riverbank or waterway within the Realm
Prerequisite: Completion of The River Walk and The Clean River Walk
Story Context
The river now sings once more, its waters bright with renewal. Yet its edges still hold the echoes of old neglect — plastic tangled in reeds, shards hidden beneath moss, the quiet plea of land awaiting care.
The Council calls upon you, Hero of Flow, for the final act in the Way of Water. You have walked with the current, cleansed its depths, and listened to its voice. Now you are asked to tend its borders — where earth and water meet, and balance is made whole again.
Through your hands, the land will remember how to breathe beside the flowing stream. This is the work of a Keeper: to guard what has been healed and to ensure that harmony endures.
Preparation and Guidance
Gather gloves (recommended), sturdy bags, and tools for safe collection. A trowel, small shovel, or spade may assist with embedded debris. Bring a respectful awareness — you are entering sacred ground, the edge where elements meet.
Choose a section of riverbank that feels neglected yet welcoming. Do not disturb nesting grounds, animal homes, or rooted plants unless they are entangled in trash. Move deliberately, as though performing a rite of restoration — because you are.
You will know what to touch and what to leave. Trust that guidance.
Objectives
1) Survey the Riverside
Walk the length of the bank and look closely. Notice where the land is weary — where plastic clings, where bottles hide, where roots reach into emptiness. Mark these places with your memory or a simple token (a small stone, a stick placed upright).
(Optional: take a photo of the area before you begin.)
2) Restore the Edge
Return to each marked place and free it of what binds it. Collect litter and debris from along the bank and nearby forest edges.
Where it feels right, place fallen branches or stones to slow erosion, or plant native flora to help the bank hold steady.
Your movements should be patient and sure — this is not a race but a renewal.
(Optional: capture a moment of your work or the restored space.)
3) Engage the Community
Invite others to join if the moment calls for it — family, friends, or fellow Heroes. Teach them what you have learned about the sacred balance between water and land.
If you are alone, speak aloud what you would teach. The river will hear you, and that is enough.
4) Offer Gratitude
When your work is done, stand or kneel beside the water. Touch the ground with one hand and the water with the other, bridging the two as one.
Offer thanks and a silent promise:
“As long as I walk this realm, flow and soil shall remain as one.”
(Optional: take an after photo if possible.)
5) Reflect and Report
Share your reflection, story, or images with the Council:

Write of what you felt — what the river showed you, what the land released, or what new insight arose. Let your words carry both gratitude and truth.
Completion
By tending both river and land, you ascend to the title of Keeper of Flow. The rivers know your name, the stones remember your steps, and the realm hums with quiet gratitude. You have completed the circle — to walk, to cleanse, and to protect.
Through your effort, the Way of Water now flows unbroken.
Bonus Objectives
- Plant a small native tree, flower, or patch of grass along the river’s edge.
- Leave a simple marker — a small stone cairn, an inukshuk, or driftwood sign of renewal.
- Return after one moon to ensure your work remains sound.
- Teach one other person how to begin their own River Walk.
